An asphalt resurfacing project on Old Woodward Avenue will make getting around Birmingham a bit tricky over the next few days.

The project begins Monday and should wrap up by Sept. 6, according to a news release.

Affected portions of Old Woodward are:

  • Willits Street to Brown Street: Northbound and southbound drive lanes
  • North of Hazel Street to North of Landon Avenue: Northbound drive lane (angled parking spaces will not be repaved)

The city has long-range plans to completely reconstruct the Old Woodward Avenue corridor (Willits Street to Landon Avenue) in approximately 2018-2019. In the interim, projects such as the one beginning Monday provide routine maintenance.

The contractor will stage equipment at the affected area on Monday, and asphalt removal and other preparation work will take place Tuesday-Friday.

Asphalt paving should take about a day and normal traffic patterns should resume by Friday, Sept. 5.

All parking will be open and available during the Labor Day weekend, and the southbound angled parking between Hazel Street and Landon Avenue should be available throughout the majority of the project, the city said.
