Valentine's Day: Michigan Men Know What Women Want

A study by a date-auction website shows that men across the country prefer to give flowers for Valentine’s Day. That leads to disappointment in many states, but not in Michigan.

When it comes to the perfect Valentine’s Day gift, men and women and Michigan agree.

Men like to give flowers. Women like to receive them.

Take a bow, men of Michigan. You’re rare, according to a recent survey by the date-auction website, WhatsYourPrice.com – more about that later – which asked 100,000 men and women what they would most like to give and receive for Valentine’s Day.

The results showed an 86 percent expectation gap between both sexes, except in Michigan and six other states, where men know what women want.

According to the survey respondents, flowers are men’s overwhelming favorite gift to give across most states, ages, and income levels. However, flowers were hugely unpopular among women, who said they most desired jewelry.

Michigan women, take a bow, too. This is no doubt a huge relief to the men who just want to make you happy. We’re not sure what Brandon Wade, the founder and CEO of the website, was saying – surely not that Michigan women are staid and unadventurous, and that men lack imagination and creativity.

“Although flowers are a traditional gift, they are much too predictable on Valentine’s Day,” he said. “Women appreciate an element of surprise, and by giving this kind of gift, men risk appearing unthoughtful and unimaginative.”

He is, after all, the CEO and founder of an organization whose tag line is that money can buy love. Men and women are allowed to bid on first dates with members they find attractive. The site, launched in April 2011, has 800,000 members worldwide.

“WhatsYourPrice.com is taking the science out of dating, because really it’s all about economics,” Wade wrote on the website. “Dating is about supply and demand, quality over quantity. We know what it takes to capture the attention of a beautiful girl, but after that first date, the rest is up to you.”
