Square Lake-Franklin Tops Bloomfield List of Dangerous Intersections

With an average of more than 27 crashes per year since 2007, the intersection of Square Lake at Franklin is the most dangerous for drivers in the Bloomfield area, according to crash data collected by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).

SEMCOG's findings are based on annual crash data to analyze which crossroads and road segments see the highest number of accidents and the reasoning behind this.

While none of the intersections or segments in Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township rank high in Oakland County's overall total, motorists should use the provided data to be extra careful when driving. 

"While we don't have any that are high frequency for the area, they are high for us," said Bloomfield Township Sargeant Craig Shackleford. "People can use this to see where there are high instances of crashes, so they can pay more attention."

The intersections of Maple and Telegraph and Square Lake at Woodward are both repeated twice in the top-10 list for Bloomfield Township because they are broken up by segment parts, according to Sgt. Shackleford.

The numbers are also representative of accidents that have occured within 150 feet of the intersection.

Sgt. Shackleford also recommends several safety tips including:

• Focus on your driving
• Buckle up
• Stay alert, minimize own distractions
• Obey the speed limit
• Allow yourself enough time for your trip
• Stay informed to situations on your route
• Set a good example as a driver

"If you find something that you didn't expect or you don't really understand, courtesy and common sense normally will get you through," he adds.
