Why: Township officials say the millage will allow service levels to remain the same.
Cost: If approved, the township will begin collecting the tax on Dec. 13, and expects to generate $7.41 million in the first year.
To Consider: This millage is good for 10 years and is responsible for covering roughly one-third of the township's $24 million public safety budget. Residents approved additional funding in 2010 that is used to supplement the cost.
Township officials report that due to changes in the Headlee Amendment and the Consumer Price Index, that the purchasing power of this millage will be $2.7 million less than when it was first administered in 2003. The township spent a good portion of last year trying to eliminate future legacy costs by successfully negotiating new contracts with employees.
