Matott, 59, submitted his resignation last Friday and targeted May 31 as his final day with the department after 33 years. City Manager Jay Cravens said April 30 would be sufficient time to find and transition a successor.

The search for new director will include opportunities for experienced candidates both within and outside the department, Matott said. The qualifications and desired skills are still being developed.

"Chief Matott is an outstanding person is so many ways," Commissioner Pat Hardy said. "He has been with us since 1982, when he joined our dispatch team, and ultimately worked his way up to Chief. He’s a wonderful role-model and we are fortunate to have had him all of these years."
