Metal Thief Headed Back to Prison; Competency Exam Ordered for Man Who Scuffled With Police

A Pontiac man convicted of multiple metal looting cases in Oakland County and a suspect in at least one at a Bloomfield Township business was sentenced to prison Friday.

Richard Campau, 51, was ordered to serve between three and 20 years in prison on counts of larceny of less than $1,000, Oakland County Circuit Court records show. Circuit Judge Rudy Nichols credited him for 56 days served in the Oakland County Jail since his arrest in April.

Earlier in the week, Circuit Judge Circuit Judge Shalina Kumar sentenced Campau to serve one year in the Oakland County Jail with 53 three days credit for drug possession, records show. He must also serve two years probation, during which time he must participate in residential substance abuse treatment. Campau must also pay $600 in court fees and costs, and $500 in restitution.

The sentences will be served consecutively.

He was arrested by a special team of investigators from the Auburn Hills, Bloomfield Township and Troy police departments from a shuttered school in Pontiac. Though he was not charged, Campau is a suspect in that were taken from the outside of earlier this spring, Bloomfield Township Police Sgt. Kurtis Dudek said.

It won't be his first stint behind bars. Prison records show Campau served more than five months of a maximum two-year sentence for possessing burglary tools in 2009, before his release in March 2010. His criminal history includes convictions in 2004 for unlawfully driving away an automobile and receiving and concealing weapons, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections Website.

Mental Competency Exam Ordered

A man charged with assaulting Bloomfield Township police officers during a scuffle at the store has been referred for a mental competency exam, court records show.

Marleaux Milton Webb, 24, will be evaluated for his understanding of the charges against him that resulted from the May 8 incident.

Officers responded to the store about 6 p.m. after receiving calls from employees about a man who was wandering and acting strangely in the store for roughly two to three hours, reports said. Two officers found the man, later identified as Webb, sitting in the sewing area on the store's second floor. He initially told officers he was involved in a "crash down the road" and became very agitated when officers said they were not aware of any crash and told him to leave the store.

Police said Webb made multiple attempts for an officer's weapon before he broke free and jumped from the second floor and fled. He was arrested about a quarter-mile away.

He faces and assault with a dangerous weapon, as well as single counts of assaulting an officer resulting in injury, and disarming an officer.
