DCDS students help others, build character through school-wide community service month

DCDS concludes centennial year by celebrating service, aiming to collect 100 pints of blood and 100 pounds of clothes in April

Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) will conclude its yearlong Centennial Anniversary celebration by giving back to the community with a month of service. Students, families and alumni from around the world have joined forces on a number of service projects throughout the year to cultivate a spirit of community and foster good citizenship and character. DCDS Headmaster Glen Shilling made the announcement.

“At Detroit Country Day School, we are not only committed to providing a high level of academic opportunities for our students, but also to building individuals with strong characters who contribute to society in a positive way,” said Shilling. “For this reason, we chose to incorporate community service projects and programs into our 100th anniversary celebration. It is a joy to see the dedication and passion that our students, alumni and community bring to helping others.”

Throughout the year, students in grades pre-K through12 participated in a variety of service projects ranging from beautifying neighborhoods and contributing to a food bank to building an orphanage and volunteering at community organizations such as the Humane Society and Grace Centers of Hope. This month, the Upper School hosted a Red Cross blood drive to collect 100 pints of blood, and a clothing collection to donate 100 pounds of clothes.
