Man with fake CCW permit arrested on multiple warrants

The Bloomfield Township Police Department arrested a Livonia man who was carrying a concealed weapon and was wanted on multiple warrants Monday afternoon, reports said.

Jason Latzman, 33, was arraigned Tuesday at 48th District Court in Bloomfield Township on charges of uttering and publishing, carrying a concealed weapon and driving with a suspended license, records show. He remained at the Oakland County Jail on Wednesday on $25,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing scheduled next week.

An officer on routine patrol ran the license plate of a vehicle in front of him while driving along Opdyke Road shortly after 2 p.m. and after a few minutes learned the plate was stolen, according to a report. The officer briefly lost sight of the vehicle but found it a short time later in the parking lot of the Marriott Hotel on Center Point Parkway. The officer confronted the driver, Latzman, who acknowledged he was armed and showed a permit to carry a concealed weapon (CCW).

A Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN ) check on the driver showed that his driver’s license was suspended and that there were multiple warrants for his arrest.

Reports said there were no legitimate records of Latzman having a concealed pistol license, and further investigation revealed that the document he presented was fake. He was arrested without incident.

Fraud cases

  • A man tried to purchase more than $2,300 in computer equipment and gift cards from the Staples store on the township’s north side Tuesday. Police reports said the man was shopping in the store at about 5 p.m. and tried to pay with a check. As store employees tried to verify the check, the man walked out of the store empty-handed. He also left behind a Michigan driver’s license, police reports said. Further details were unavailable, and the incident remains under investigation.
  • Another counterfeit $50 bill was passed in the township last week, according to reports. Police said a pizza deliveryman received the bogus bill as payment for a pizza delivered to a residence in the 2600 block of Douglas Drive on Nov. 16. Investigators are following up. It is the fifth incident involving fake $50 bills used at local businesses since June. No suspects have been identified or arrested.

Home invasion

Bloomfield Township Police are investigating a home invasion at a vacant property where copper piping was taken. Officers responded to the 1600 block of Bracken Drive and found that pipes were missing from the structure, reports said. The home has been vacant for the past six months, and it is unclear when the theft occurred.

Larceny from vehicles

  • A vehicle parked in the 600 block of Rolling Rock was burglarized sometime overnight between Sunday and Monday. The front window of the vehicle was smashed, and a touch-screen radio/navigation system was stolen from the dashboard, reports said.
  • A resident in the 7000 block of Woodbank reported that an iPod was taken from an unlocked vehicle that was parked in the garage, reports said. The theft occurred sometime between Nov. 16-17.
