Police: Man Warned for Fireworks Celebration During Diwali; Trespassers at Cranbrook

Officers with the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety issued a warning to a resident for violating the city's fireworks ordinance during a weekend Diwali celebration, police said.

The officers responded to the area of Canterbury and Trowbridge roads for reports of gunshots, or fireworks being set off at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, according to reports. Officers found the homeowner setting off fireworks and advised him of the ordinance, which prohibits certain fireworks in residential areas. 

The homeowner complied with police and was not cited, reports said.

Duwali is a Hindu festival that . Fireworks are traditionally a big part of the celebration as a symbolic gesture to ward off evil spirits.

Trespassers Traced to Suspicious Vehicle

Officers issued verbal warnings to three Royal Oak residents that trespassed on Cranbrook property over the weekend, reports said.

Cranbrook security called police after finding a suspicious vehicle in the area of Cranbrook Road and Brady Lane at about 12:30 a.m. Friday morning. The officers located the red, 1997 Chevy and determined that it was registered to a Royal Oak resident. Reports said they made several phone calls to obtain a cell phone number for the registered owner and, upon obtaining one, asked him to return to the vehicle immediately. The owner returned from Cranbrook Educational Community campus with two friends, also from Royal Oak, and all were questioned by police.

Officers determined they were trespassing and no further criminal activity was under way. They issued a verbal warning to stay off the property, reports said.

Cranbrook Death Investigation

Chief Rick Matott said no new information was available regarding the sudden death of Cranbrook student Caleb Lei last month. The investigation remains ongoing between the department and the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office.
