Police: Unlocked Vehicles Targeted; Larceny Reported at the Maple Theater

Rash of thefts from unlocked vehicles

The Bloomfield Township Police Department issued a warning to residents after several larcenies from unlocked vehicles were reported last week.

Officers responded to multiple calls from homeowners on Westbourne, Middlebury and E. Bradford streets on Feb. 27 that claimed items were missing from their vehicles, reports said. They identified six separate vehicles that were unlocked and entered overnight. Items taken were collectively valued at about $1,100. No suspect information was available. 

"These types of crimes are considered opportunistic and if the vehicles were locked, the thefts would not have taken place," the department stated on its Facebook Page.

Missing cell phone

A patron of the Maple Theater reported her cell phone was taken at some point on Feb. 22 and taken to Detroit, reports said. The woman told officers with the Bloomfield Township Police Department that she remembered silencing her Apple iPhone before the movie began and could not find it anywhere when she returned home.

By using a locator app., the woman said she discovered the phone was in the area of Evergreen Road and Pembroke in Detroit. She could not narrow down the location further, but the case remains under investigation.

Tires stolen from Mercedes dealership

Officers responded to the Mercedes-Benz of Bloomfield Hills dealership on Feb. 23 after employees discovered that the wheels and tires were taken from a 2003 SL55AMG that was awaiting service, police reports said. The theft reportedly occurred sometime between 6 p.m. on Feb. 22 and 10 a.m. on Feb. 23. Total value of the theft was estimated at $6,000, reports said.

Identity theft

A resident in the 1000 block of W. Spinning Wheel Drive told police she received a message from Verizon Wireless indicating that she owed money on two cell phones that she never purchased or used, according to reports. The woman said she also recently received bills from AT&T Wireless claiming she owed them $3,000 for phones she never had. Authorities suspect her personal information was compromised and continue to investigate the phones in use.

Bloomfield Hills

A resident in the 1000 block of Tiverton Road reported that the street-side mailbox at their home was knocked off the post and damaged on Feb. 22, reports from the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety said. The resident reported the damage at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 22, but believed it occurred sometime between 7 a.m. on Feb. 20 and 6 p.m. on Feb. 21. The woman said she found mail inside the box when she discovered the damage. No suspect information was available.

West Bloomfield Patch reported that the West Bloomfield Police Department is investigating a rash of multiple malicious destruction of property reports related to mailboxes that occurred during the past two weeks, reports said.
