Police: Woman Fabricated Assault by Masked Men in Bloomfield Hills

A 21-year-old Royal Oak woman could face charges for filing a false police report after alleging she was assaulted by two masked men in a Bloomfield Hills parking lot last week, police said. The woman came to the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety at about 10 a.m. on Feb. 12 and said two men wearing ski masks grabbed her as she walked into work in the 100 block of E. Long Lake Road earlier that morning, police reports said.

She then told police she had a box cutter and used it to fend off the assailants by swinging it at them before they ran off. She was not injured. Police Chief Rick Matott said officers thoroughly investigated the complaint and determined there were several inconsistencies in the woman's statement.

Investigators confronted the woman with the inconsistencies, and she admitted to fabricating the story, Matott said. No reason was given for the false report, and authorities will seek a warrant for filing a false police report.

Attempted Home Invasion

Officers responded to a home invasion report in the 1000 block of Stratford Place at about 12:30 p.m. on Fab. 10, reports said. They encountered a house sitter who claimed that someone tried to force their way inside through the front door, but was unsuccessful.

The officers confirmed there was damage to the front door, as well as other doorways to the home, reports said. However, they contacted the homeowner and learned that the damage — other than that to the front door — was older and unrelated to the incident. The investigation remains open.
