Romney Declares Winning Michigan Would Mean Presidency

As he made his way through the Midwest and into Michigan as part of his 'Every Town Counts' bus tour, Republican Party presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said that taking his home state would mean victory over Barack Obama in November.

"If I win in Michigan, then I become the president, and that would mean a lot to me personally," he told reporters upon leaving Iowa to Michigan, the final stop on a five-day, six-state tour, according to Foxnews.com.

The former Massachusetts governor grew up in Bloomfield Hills and , and overwhelming support in Oakland and Wayne counties.

But winning the state is no given in November. President Obama has visited Michigan, and the Detroit area in particular several times in the past year. His last stop was an exclusive including an in April.

Still, it's one of a handful of states President Barack Obama won in 2008 where Romney's campaign team sees an opportunity.

"There's another level of states that are all states that Obama won last time," said deputy campaign manager Katie Packer Gage, a Michigan native, according to Foxnews.com. "And he won't win if he doesn't win them again."

Fox also reports that Romney's 2012 campaign has been filled with regular reminders of his Michigan roots, including having a photo of his father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney tacked to the wall in the campaign bus through the primary. The candidate has talked about this love for Vernors, and supporters come to campaign rallies armed with Romney`68 memorabilia and stories about volunteering on his father's presidential campaign.
