Water, Sewer Rates to Rise in Bloomfield Hills

The increases are due to city's commitments to regional authorities and to the Detroit Water and Sewer Department.

Water and sewer rates for residents of the City of Bloomfield Hills will rise July 1 as the operating costs to keep the city connected increase.

Residents will pay an average bill of $314.73 for water, an increase of $26.28 over the 2010-11 rate, according to information provided by city engineers at Tuesday's City Commission meeting. Customers hooked to the sewer system will pay an average bill of $252.86 per quarter, an increase of $29.20 over the current rate.

The vote was unanimous, and there was no discussion from the public at Tuesday's meeting.

Officials said the increases are necessary because the city's partners — the Detroit Water and Sewer Department, the Oakland County Water Resources Commission and the Southeast Oakland County Water Authority (SOCWA) — will pass their costs on to member communities.

Bloomfield Hills has been a member of SOCWA since 2009. The city owns its water and sewer lines and is responsible for all compliance, maintenance and improvements. However, it contracts with the regional authority for operations and maintenance.
