Former Divine Child Coach Dies

Robert J. LaPointe, a resident of Canton, coached football and taught for 42 years, including time at Dearborn's , where he took the football team to the Class B state championship in 1975.

LaPointe also coached and taught at Harper Woods Notre Dame and Belleville High School, as well as Eastern Michigan University, where he brought them out of their losing streak in 1982.

LaPointe is survived by his wife, Carol; children Renee (Doug) Babcock, Bo, Daniel, and Karen (Jeffrey) Reich; sister Bonnie (Tim) Wyman. He was the proud Papa of Brooke and Daniel Babcock, Andrew, Marynn, and Cameron LaPointe, and Sydney, Liam, and Genevieve Reich.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 4-9 p.m. and Friday from 3-9 p.m. at Vermeulen Funeral Home, located at 46401 W Ann Arbor Road in Plymouth. In state Saturday 9:30 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral service at Ward Presbyterian Church, located at 40000 Six Mile Road in Northville. Interment Glen Eden Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Belleville High School Football Program, 501 W. Columbia, Belleville, MI, 48111.
