Darany Applauds Bills Signed Into Law That Will Help Michigan Veterans

Legislation allows for "veteran" designation on state issued ID card and driver's license

LANSING – State Representative George T. Darany (D-Dearborn) joined Governor Rick Snyder on May 14 as he signed legislation that would allow Michigan veterans to have a "veteran" designation put on their state issued ID card and driver's license. The legislation will help make it easier for military veterans to document their service to our country.

"Michigan is home to an estimated 680,000 veterans who have sacrificed an incredible amount in service to our country," said Darany. "This legislation will allow veterans to easily prove their status in order to be eligible for any opportunities that they deserve."

There are many businesses throughout Michigan that provide special discounts or reduced rates for our veterans and they often require proof of veteran status in order for individuals to be eligible. House Bill 4037 and Senate Bill 219, which is a similar version of Darany's bill, House Bill 4287, which passed the House in February, will make it easier for Michigan veterans to access these opportunities. Michigan is the 28th state to pass such laws and according to the Secretary of State's office, it will take approximately a year to implement this legislation.

"We need to make sure that Michigan veterans can easily access the benefits that are available to them," said Darany. "To me, it really doesn't matter if it was the Senate version or House version of the bill that was signed into law, what matters most is that we send a clear signal to our veterans that the people of Michigan are truly grateful for their service to our country. They should not have to face unnecessary obstacles when they have already given so much to our country and this legislation is one way we can show our respect and appreciation. This is just good public policy and I appreciate everyone who has worked so hard to get this legislation signed into law."

Darany was joined by Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, other legislators, and Michigan military veterans and officials for the bill signing.
