Diary of a Democratic Delegate - Love Those Nuns!
Dearborn Democratic activist, Fred Hoffman, an Obama delegate at his party's upcoming national convention, continues his blog series here with an item on the work of a group of policy-focused nuns.
As a political junkie and a campaign contributor, I get quite a few appeals in the mail every day. Some want money, some ask for support, some offer thanks and some just provide interesting reading. One in the latter group came last week from NETWORK, the Catholic social justice organization run, as far as I can tell, by religious sisters and their supporters. This is the group that staged the recent NUNS ON THE BUS tour to share their Gospel-based opposition to the Paul Ryan House Republican budget, which, fortunately will get killed in the Democratic Senate or by PRESIDENT OBAMA - - so long as they remain in power. -- THESE NUNS are willing to stand up to male church hierarchy that would prefer the good sisters instead rail on gay marriage, condoms and abortions. The Nuns, who don't necessarily fight the church position on political sex issues, say they prefer to stress the New Testament, Jesus-based people-serving messages. THEIR POLITICAL SCORECARD lists as "pluses" congressional votes for the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), women's paycheck equity, the DREAM Act as a first step to immigration reform, ratification of the nuclear arms reduction treaty, unemployment benefits extensions, funding for youth summer employment, tax cut extensions for low and middle class taxpayers, disclosure of big corporate and union campaign donors, Wall Street regulatory reform, home energy efficiency loan programs, child nutrition programs and federal support for retaining local teachers -- WOW -- What a refreshing agenda! -- GOD BLESS THESE NUNS for standing up for REAL PEOPLE! -- By the way, that Network Scorecard gives Senator Debbie Stabenow a 100% ranking (her likely opponent Former Congressman Pete Hoekstra got a 0%), and gives area Congressmen John Dingell, Gary Peters, John Conyers and Sandy Levin all 100% ranking as well. -- If you want to learn more or connect with this group, contact them at www.networklobby.org
