Michael Berry Career Center HOSA Students Compete
The Michael Berry Career Center Health Occupations Students of American (HOSA) participated in state competitions in Traverse City, Michigan on April 11 and 12, 2013.

The Michael Berry Career Center Health Occupations Students of American (HOSA) participated in state competitions in Traverse City, Michigan on April 11 and 12, 2013. During the 2012-2013 school year, health science HOSA students learned and developed medical skills in the classroom and used these medical skills to compete against other Career and Technical Education students in the state.
Nine students traveled to the Grand Traverse Bay and Resort. Sam Lopez and Zeinab Bazzi competed in an individual event, Medical Assisting. Medical Assisting consists of two rounds. Round one was a 50 question test. The competitors advanced to round two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. Sammy and Zeinab had to perform two tasks: proper filing technique and sterile gloving.

Natalie Hofmeister and Ithar Alsarraf competed in Medical Math, another difficult event! Taking place early Friday morning, their event consisted of a 90 minute exam composed of 50 multiple choice questions and 25 short answer questions. The two competitors had to solve problems dealing with drip rates, pediatric dosages, conversions, etc. While neither were a finalist, both did very well and were proud of their efforts and accomplishments up to that point!

Ola Elharake and Hikmat Yassine competed in Career Health Display, a teamwork event designed for two individuals. Their objective was to display a specific career or cluster of careers in a neat, original display. They were then graded based of a specific rubric.
Zeinab Hachem represented MBCC at states in her individual competition, Medical Terminology. Her objective was to complete a 90 minute exam consisting of 100 multiple choice items. Zeinab faced some very difficult terms that even the most experienced medical personnel would find tricky to decipher.
Mohammad Zeeshan and Ahmad Mallah really made MBCC proud at states. Competing in a teamwork event, HOSA Video, the two created a video displaying “What We Do In HOSA.” Clearly their video and speech following was over-the-top because the two took home the gold.
The journey to Traverse City for HOSA states was better than anyone could have expected. It was a great bonding experience and an opportunity of a lifetime!
