So, my strawberries were disappearing, it seemed, right when they would ripen. Only the ripe ones would be gone; the ones still growing would be untouched. It looked like the work of an animal because the fruits were usually only partially eaten and still attached to the plant. I thought it was rabbits at first, but little barriers that I would make with sticks didn't seem to help. Some online reading suggested to me that rabbits prefer to eat the strawberry flowers rather than the strawberries themselves. Since my strawberry flowers were just fine, I decide to think about something else. I found lots of gardening blogs complaining about birds stealing strawberries. So, I've put up some bird netting around my strawberries (pictured) and I've since been eating nice red, super sweet strawberries every few days! I'll get a picture of some of the fruits up soon.
The Eastborn garden has expanded a bit. We have a new gardener! She is starting with lettuce and beets. I hope she has a great experience!
A few weeks ago, a helpful neighbor provided me with a trashcan full of compost. A few days after receiving the nice gift, a car tire randomly appeared on the garden lot. I immediately thought, 'hey, that would be great as a pot for some more plants.' So, I filled it with compost and put in some seeds! Now we've got another nice bed that will, hopefully, sprout some nice flowers and maybe a couple of pumpkins; some of the pumpkin seedlings are already coming up (pic).
