Liv Lounge Abruptly Closes Before Vote on Liquor License

DEARBORN, MI – The owners of Liv Lounge, whose liquor license was in jeopardy after a recent wave of violence in Michigan Avenue bar district, abruptly closed Monday, hours before the Dearborn City Council was poised to act on proposals to shut down the popular lounge.

Amir Makled, an attorney for the hip-hop venue that featured live broadcasts from Detroit radio WJLB-FM (97.9), told the Detroit Free Press the bar’s closure is the “best resolution for all parties.”

Liv Lounge’s owners have “no plans in the future to open another bar in Dearborn,” he said.

“I think the message is very loud and clear: There is zero tolerance for this type of behavior, business activity within the city of Dearborn,” City Council President Susan Dabaja said at Monday’s meeting.
Residents had complained that violence and other activities at the Liv Lounge and other clubs in the same vicinity are making the west Dearborn area unsafe, and that noise is disruptive to neighbors’ quality of life.

In an interview with the Free Press, City Council President Pro-Tem Thomas Tafelski said the area is “a fantastic business district and unfortunately we had an issue with this particular place.”
In February, police offered a $1,000 reward after one person was shot on a crowded dance floor after getting into a fight with another person at Liv Lounge. More recently, a Sterling Heights woman allegedly fired a gun twice during a fight in the parking lot of Post Bar, which is about a block away from Liv Lounge.
