Old Woodward Ave. Stores Add Nostalgia to Glass Show in Dearborn This Weekend
Michigan Depression Glass Society Show, Nov. 1 & 2 at 10 a.m.; Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, US12 @ Greenfield Rd, Dearborn. $5

Dearborn, Mich. -- It will be a nostalgic 1940s walk down Woodward Ave. to peer through store front windows that will bring back memories for many and let others experience the Detroit tradition that they’ve only heard about.
The Michigan Depression Glass Society (MDGS) will host their 41st show and sale on November 1 and 2 in Dearborn, where they will recreate window displays of popular Detroit shops including JL Hudson’s department store, SS Kresge’s dimestore, Sander’s confections, Vernor’s soda fountain and Woolworth’s five-and-dime, each vignette featuring glassware of this earlier time.
The annual show takes place at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center and hosts nearly two-dozen dealers from across the country selling all American-made glassware from the early 1900s into the 1970s.

Often referred to as “Depression Glass” due to much of the colorful glassware being produced throughout the Great Depression, the show includes elegant-, decorative-, kitchen-, etched- and pressed-glassware. Well-known manufacturers including Fostoria, Heisey, Cambridge, Fenton, Imperial, Paden City, Anchor Hocking, Federal, Hazel Atlas, Westmoreland, Jeannette, MacBeth-Evans and many more will fill aisle after aisle of stunning glassware.
The popular Detroit storefronts being arranged by MDGS members will give a glimpse of what similar window displays of the era would have featured from U.S. glassware manufacturers and will provide a walk down memory lane depicting Woodward Ave. when it was a busy retail shopping district. Shoppers will even be able to meet under a recreated ”Kern’s clock”, an iconic Detroit symbol of days-gone-by.
