Wanted On 6 Sex Crimes, Man Busted Applying For Cop Job

A man who applied to be a Wayne County police officer didn't disclose that he was wanted for rape, sodomy and a "litany" of other charges.

Who knows what a 25-year-old Detroit man was thinking when he applied to become a police officer for Wayne County.

Was it that being wanted for what police called a “litany” of sex crimes — six in all, including sodomy, rape and first-degree sex abuse — would show him to have the special expertise that would give him an edge over other candidates?

No, no, no, Sheriff Benny Napoleon says. No.

In a news release, Napoleon said the 25-year-old man applied for a police officer job in September and said he had been living in the area for a few months.

The sheriff’s office asked him to come in and “finalize the application process” Tuesday, but instead of a job offer, he was taken into custody on a felony warrant issued in Madison County, KY, in March, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.

The man may have thought he had dodged the charges, which hadn’t been entered in the national crime database.

He hadn’t.

“Persistent investigative police work” by an officer conducting a background check betrayed the applicant’s past, the sheriff’s office said.

“This officer’s tenacity prevented a criminal from joining our ranks,” Napoleon said in the news release.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is hiring nearly 100 police officers and filling other positions in the county.

But if you’ve got outstanding warrants for your arrest, don’t bother applying.

“Let this be a warning to anyone attempting to get a job with the Sheriff’s Office — you will be screened thoroughly and completely in the interest of public safety — for our personnel and the citizens who interact with our jails,” Napoleon said.
