1 Dead, 1 Critically Injured In Detroit Freeway Crash: Police

Michigan State Police believe drugs and alcohol played a factor in the crash.

DETROIT — One person was killed and another was critically injured in a Tuesday night crash on the Lodge Freeway in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.

Police said a 34-year-old from Warren was speeding in the southbound lanes on the freeway near West Outer Drive at 11:15 p.m. when they struck another vehicle.

One of the passengers in the non at fault vehicle, a 21-year-old from Detroit, was killed in the crash while the second passenger in the vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital where they were listed in critical condition, according to Michigan State Police.

The suspected driver who was speeding on the freeway was not seriously injured in the crash, according to Michigan State Police.

Police believe drugs and alcohol played a factor in the crash. The suspected driver who caused the crash refused all tests and a search warrant is being sought for their blood, according to Michigan State Police.

Police said that the families have been notified of the incident.

"We have lost another member of our community in a preventable crash." Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw said. "There is no excuse for any driver driving at a high rate of speed and under the influence on our roads."

Police were still investigating the crash and were waiting on blood results from the suspect and a prosecutor's review for charges.
