DETROIT — One person was killed in a Wednesday night fiery crash on Belle Isle in Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers said the driver struck a utility pole and the car caught on fire near Strand and Woodside Drive at 8:35 p.m.

Troopers initially could not find the driver of the car as firefighters battled the blaze, according to Michigan State Police.

Once firefighters put out the blaze, troopers found a person dead in the driver's seat, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers tracked down the vehicle's owner, who told them she loaned the car to a woman friend to run some errands, according to Michigan State Police.

Family members of the person troopers believe to be the victim confirmed she was loaned the vehicle by the owner, according to Michigan State Police.

Police were waiting for autopsy results before positively identifying the person killed in the crash.

Police were still trying to determine what caused the crash.
