DETROIT — Four people — including a state trooper — were taken to the hospital after an overnight crash in Detroit involving a driver suspected of being intoxicated, according to police.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday on southbound Southfield Road near Fenkell Avenue, police said.

A trooper was outside his vehicle conducting a traffic stop when a speeding SUV hit the back of his patrol car, causing the SUV to become airborne and strike the trooper and two people involved in the ongoing stop, according to police.

All four injured parties were taken to the hospital, although none of their wounds were critical, police said. The trooper may have torn his Achilles’ tendon and suffered road rash from being dragged, according to police.

The driver of the SUV was “belligerent and uncooperative,” police said, adding law enforcement was pursuing a search warrant for blood due to suspected impaired driving.

“Here is another driver, possibly impaired, driving at a high rate of speed,” Lt. Mike Shaw said in a social media post. “It puts all of us in danger and is preventable. We are extremely lucky that this crash did not end up much worse. Just slow down and don’t drive impaired. It is that easy.”
