Amazon To Add 1,600 Jobs At 2nd SE Michigan Fulfillment Center

Amazon is opening a second fulfillment center in southeast Michigan. About 1,600 jobs will be created.

ROMULUS, MI — The internet retail giant Amazon.com will add 1,600 jobs at a second southeast Michigan fulfillment center, Crain's Detroit Business reported. The new center will be located in Romulus, Crain's said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The Michigan Strategic Fund board is expected to consider a $5 million business development grant to assist in Amazon’s expansion to Romulus on Tuesday, Crain’s reported. The state economic development board would have to approve the grant.

Last year, the Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $7.5 million performance-based grant for Seattle-based Amazon after the internet giant announced it would spend $90 million to turn a former General Motors factory in Livonia into a regional distribution warehouse. Amazon said the Livonia facility would create 1,000 jobs.

Michigan beat out Ohio and Indiana for the Amazon fulfillment center in Livonia, the Detroit Free Press reported last year. That site, located near the Interstate 90 and Interstate 275 interchange, is located about 20 miles from the Detroit Metro Airport, and the Romulus facility would be even closer.
