Detroit Area Mom And Son Become Father And Daughter

An extraordinary family stays together and a marriage remains intact after the mom transitions to a dad and a son transitions to a daughter.

DETROIT, MI — A transgender mother and son from Metro Detroit are becoming father and daughter as both transition to the gender identity they say they were born with. Erica Maison surprised now 15-year-old Corey Maison with a gift of estrogen hormone replacement therapy in 2015 then revealed she had struggled with her own gender identity.

Eric Mason, the parent, said he was inspired by his daughter’s willingness to come to terms with her identity and decided to confront the feelings he had wrestled with since childhood – that he was a boy trapped inside a girl’s body.

The two recently sat down with “60 Minutes” in Australia to discuss their mutual decisions to become what they call their true selves.

“When I was younger, I used to wish for cancer so I would have to get a mastectomy,” Eric told Tara Brown of “60 Minutes.” He said that as a woman, he “hated being pregnant,” according to an account of the interview on 9news.com.au.

Eric said that once he confronted who he truly was, he felt relieved. But then came a feeling of terror and “fear for what my future would hold, fear for how my family and children,” including his “completely heterosexual husband,” would respond.

Les Maison didn’t flinch, telling “60 Minutes” that he is “still married to the same person I married.”

“And that’s fine,” Les Maison said. “I don’t really know what else to say. That’s really all there is to it.”

Since getting her first box of hormones to begin the transition to a girl, Corey has become a champion for others struggling with the same gender identity issues and against bullying of all forms on her Instagram account. The pop duo High Dive Heart told her story as part of the #IAmAMisfit social media campaign.

Corey doesn’t speak but holds up a series of cards that tell of her often painful journey. “I might look happy now, I haven’t always been. I’ve known I was different all my life,” it begins.
