DETROIT — A 15-year-old Detroit boy was charged in connection to the fatal shooting of another 15-year-old boy at a Detroit gas station, Wayne County Prosector Kym Worthy announced Wednesday.

Mekhi Green, 15, was charged as an adult with one count each of first-Degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and two counts of felony firearm, officials said.

Green is accused by authorities of shooting another 15-year-old Detroit boy to death at the Mobile gas station on the 11000 block of East Seven Mile Road at 7:42 p.m. on Jan. 7.

Authorities said Green walked into the gas station with his brother and started firing shots at the 15-year-old victim, striking him in the buttocks. He attempted to fire again, but his gun jammed and he fled outside the gas station.

Moments later, Green returned to the gas station and went inside to find the injured 15-year-old victim on the floor, authorities said. That's when authorities said Green stood over the 15-year-old and shot him five shots at close range, fatally killing the 15-year-old boy.

Green then ran away from the gas station before officers and medics arrived on scene, in which they declared the 15-year-old dead from the gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Green was arrested by authorities on Saturday after an investigation by the Detroit Police Department, officials said. Green was placed in jail with a probable cause conference scheduled for Feb. 15 and a preliminary exam scheduled for Feb. 22 in 36th District Court before Judge Kenneth King.

"This case is a stark reminder of why there should always be options for prosecutors when the facts allege unspeakable premeditated violence by juveniles," Worthy said. "The facts in this case warrant charging the defendant as an adult."

"Our community continues to mourn this senseless and violent attack on a child," Detroit Police Chief James E. White said. "I would like to again express my heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends. It’s heartbreaking that two families will never be the same. Also, thank you to the officers and homicide unit who dedicated countless hours on this case and relentlessly pursued the suspect."
