Driver Flees Police, Crashes Car In Detroit: MSP

Michigan State Police tried to stop a Dodge Charger for a window tint violation before the car sped away and eventually crashed in Detroit.

DETROIT — The driver of a 2019 Dodge Charger crashed into a light pole and building Wednesday in Detroit after Michigan State Police tried to stop the car for a window tint violation, officials said.

The car sped away from police as the driver exited the Southfield Freeway at Grand River Avenue in Detroit at 5:20 p.m., officials said. Police did not pursue the car, per policy.

After speeding away from police, the driver crashed into a light pole and building on eastbound Grand River Avenue and Mettetal Street, officials said.

The driver and passenger then ran away from car, but the driver was caught and taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for an evaluation. Once cleared he will be lodged at the Detroit Detention Center pending prosecutor review, officials said. Police are still looking for the passenger.

Police also found a handgun in the car, officials said.

Eastbound Grand River at Mettetal Street was closed until the light pole is removed from the road, officials said.
