Fireball Lights Up Nighttime Sky Across Southeast Michigan: Video

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — Some people were lucky enough to see a fireball streak across the nighttime sky in southeast Michigan and beyond Thursday night.

The American Meteor Society listed a report of a meteor in Berkley at 7:33 p.m. The scientific research center said people between Pennsylvania and Indiana also saw the suspected meteor.

As of Friday morning, 737 people reported seeing the suspected meteor between 7 and 8 p.m. Thursday night. Sightings span as far north as Pinconning and go as far south as South Carolina, according to the American Meteor Society.

A meteor, or shooting star or falling star, is light emitted from a burning meteoroid or an asteroid as it moves through Earth’s atmosphere. When a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere, it collides with air molecules and creates a flash of light visible from the ground below, according to the American Meteor Society.
