Flooding Stalls Traffic At Metro Detroit Airport: Officials

Arrivals were delayed by at least 45 minutes and all inbound flights were being held in their origin until at least 10 a.m., officials said.

ROMULUS, MI — Drivers were not able to reach the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport on Thursday morning due to overnight flooding from powerful thunderstorms, according to Wayne County Airport Authority officials.

Officials encouraged anyone with flights operating out of the terminal to "contact their airlines with any questions about their flight status." Delta Air Lines, Aeromexico, Air France and WestJet Airlines operate out of the McNamara Terminal.

Officials did not say if the Evans Terminal was affected by the flooding. Officials promised more information "as soon as possible."

Delays were also piling up at the airport, with departures falling at least 50 minutes behind schedule. Arrivals were delayed by at least 45 minutes and all inbound flights were being held in their origin until at least 10 a.m., officials said.

Multiple nearby roadways were also flooded out after the storms crossed the area. Both Interstate 94 ramps that lead to and from Metro Airport North Entrance were closed due to flooding, officials said.

Additionally, both directions of Interstate 275 at Interstate 94 were also closed due to flooding, causing problems for drivers looking to get into Metro Airport, officials said.

More showers and thunderstorms were expected to cross the Metro Detroit area Thursday as temperatures climb into the 90s with heat indices reaching the 100s, according to the National Weather Service.
