Former MSU Police Captain Pleads Guilty To Drunk Driving Arrest

MICHIGAN—A former Michigan State University Police captain pleaded guilty on Monday to a drunk driving arrest at the 55th District Court in Ingham County, according to a news release from Attorney General Dana Nessel's office.

Valerie O’Brien, a former captain with the Michigan State University Police Department, was arrested in February by Michigan State Police after failing a field sobriety test and refusing a preliminary breath test, the news release said.

Her blood test later showed she had a BAC of 0.251 and her police-issued pistol was in the back seat of her car at the time of arrest, Michigan State Police said.

O'Brien pleaded guilty as charged to one count of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood alcohol content, a 180-day misdemeanor and one count of carrying a concealed pistol under the influence with a BAC of 0.10 or more, a 93-day misdemeanor, the news release said.

O'Brien was also sentenced to a year of probation, 40 hours of community service, counseling and a $700 fine and $1,295 in fees and costs. She also cannot leave the state without court permission, or possess a dangerous weapon and must apologize to the arresting officer for her behavior.
