Heat Creates Hazardous Conditions Around Metro Detroit

Tuesday's temperatures will reach near 90, prompting an air quality alert and school closings.

METRO DETROIT — Tuesday’s temperatures have prompted early school closings around the area and an Air Quality Alert around the region.

According to the National Weather Service, an alert is in effect for Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Lenawee, St. Clair and Monroe counties. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has declared Tuesday to be an action day for elevated levels of ozone.

This means pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range.People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation. These activities include refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling, using gasoline powered lawn equipment and using charcoal lighter fluid.

Instead, locals are encouraged to do things like carpooling, biking to work, delaying or combining errands and using water-based paints. It is also recommended that active children and adults, and people with respiratory diseases such as asthma, limit prolonged outdoorExertion.

The heat Tuesday also prompted school closings. All schools within the Detroit Public Schools Community District will dismiss three hours early on Tuesday due to high temperatures.
