Metro Detroit Gas Station Investigated For Price Gouging
Officials said they have received a "volume of complaints" from consumers for years about the inflated prices at the gas station.
ROMULUS, MI — State investigators are going after a metro Detroit gas station for what they said is price gouging.
Officials said the BP gas station located along Middlebelt Road near Interstate 94 in Romulus has been charging anywhere from 22 percent to 72 percent more than its competitors for similar gasoline.
On April 9, officials said an investigator bought fuel at the gas station for $5.24 per gallon.

The Michigan Attorney General's Office said it has received a "volume of complaints" from consumers for years about the inflated prices at the gas station. Officials also investigated the gas station in December 2023.

The gas station is located near several car rental lots and Detroit Metro Airport. Officials said the gas station is taking advantage of unsuspecting customers.
"With the price of everything already squeezing families, the last thing Michiganders and our visitors who are rushing to return a rental car need is to be taken advantage of at the pump," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said. "Allegations of marking up prices, here by as much as 72 percent over the average, call for a vigorous investigation. My office remains committed to pursuing those who engage in illegal price gouging to the fullest extent of the law."
