DETROIT — A Michigan man was sentenced to prison time after he strangled his wife while they were living near an Army base in Japan, according to authorities.
Robert Hammock, 39, of Detroit, received one year and one day in prison, authorities said Friday, after pleading guilty in May to assault of a spouse by strangulation.
Hammock and his wife got into an argument July 19, 2021, in their off-base home outside U.S. Army Garrison Japan in Sagamihara, authorities said. He punched her in the eye twice, hit her head and body, pushed her to the ground and strangled her, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, which reported she was able to escape when Hammock tried to take her cellphone.
