📰 News we're reading

1. Rare, Potentially Destructive Bugs Found At Detroit Metro Airport (patch.com) — Travelers using Detroit Metro Airport may be interested to know that federal agriculture specialists there intercepted a rare species of giant scale insect earlier this year, preventing it from entering the country. The pests, discovered on pine bark carried from Cameroon, can lay thousands of eggs and seriously damage trees and shrubs, highlighting Detroit's role as a frontline checkpoint for protecting U.S. agriculture.

2. Midtown Detroit Coffee Shop Closing Down (patch.com) — Coffee lovers in Midtown Detroit will soon lose a familiar spot as The Red Hook prepares to close its Woodward Avenue cafe on Sept. 26 after three years. The owners thanked Detroit customers for their support and emphasized that their other Detroit and Ferndale locations will remain open, keeping the brand's presence strong in the city.

3. Ride for Discovery: 100 Miles to Support Student Research (wayne.edu) — Wayne State is hosting a Ride for Discovery cycling challenge today on Belle Isle, with laps starting at Shelter 15 and a post-ride celebration at the Detroit Yacht Club. You can ride any distance, cheer on cyclists, or simply enjoy the picnic-style gathering while supporting student research in environmental science, geology, and systems biology through donations or participation.

4. Detroit Board of Police Commissioners backs Chief Todd Bettison amid OIG investigation (cbsnews.com) — Detroit's Board of Police Commissioners has formally expressed confidence in Police Chief Todd Bettison, even as an inspector general investigation continues into his request that an activist remove old photos of Mayor Mary Sheffield. One commissioner abstained, warning the vote could appear to prejudge the probe, while others stressed they were backing his record, not weighing in on the investigation's outcome.

5. 'Not our mother': Detroit family discovers wrong body in alleged cremation error (wxyz.com) — A Detroit family says a local funeral home showed them a stranger's body dressed in their late mother's clothes, then suggested she may have been cremated by mistake. Detroit police kept the peace as relatives protested, while the funeral home's leadership says they are investigating and promises to make the family whole if they are found at fault.
