President Trump In Detroit Area Wednesday To Meet With Auto Industry Leaders

The Detroit visit is a continuation of dialogue with auto industry leaders, who Trump has pressured to produce cars and parts domestically.

(Updated) DETROIT, MI — President Donald Trump will visit the Detroit area Wednesday to meet with automakers, suppliers and unions to stem the outsourcing of jobs, the White House said Monday. Trump has been relentless in his pressure on the auto industry to produce vehicles and parts domestically, both during the campaign and after his election.

Air Force One is scheduled to touch down at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus. At 2 p.m., he will make remarks at the American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti.

The president is also scheduled to hold 6:30 p.m. rally in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday.

Trump last visited Michigan at a Dec. 9 thank-you tour rally in Grand Rapids. During the campaign, he made multiple visits to the battleground state, which hadn’t backed a Republican for president since 1988, and the strategy paid off, giving him the state’s 16 electoral votes that helped him win, despite falling about 2.9 million votes short in the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump carried Michigan by 10,704 votes.

“This is a continuation of a dialogue with auto industry leaders, and also going back and reconnecting with a lot of people who elected him,” Chris Liddell, a former chief financial officer of General Motors Co. who now serves as assistant to the president for strategic initiatives at the White House, told The Detroit News.
