Skateboarders Take Over Fisher Building, Detroit’s Largest Art Object
The Fisher Halfpipe will take over the lobby of the iconic skyscraper Monday through Thursday as part of Fisher Beacon Project.

DETROIT, MI — The lobby of the marble-clad Fisher Building, which has been called Detroit’s largest art object, has opened for skateboarding through April 6. Don’t grab your board just yet, though. Only professionals and experienced skateboarders will be able to test the Fisher Halfpipe.
The event, open to the public from 6-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, is part of what’s called The Fisher Beacon Project, which aims to open the lobby of architect Albert Kahn's Art Deco masterpiece to Detroit residents through revolving art and photography showcases and other events and spark a conversation about Detroit’s reinvention.
MKR City, which created the Fisher Halfpipe, says it is a monolithic mass bisecting the main arcade of the Fisher Building lobby. Guests will “walk through gateways beneath and will be able to view skaters above with the magnificent Fisher as a backdrop, curves of the structure and the arcs of skaters cutting through space mirroring the Fisher’s vaulted, frescoed and inlaid walls and ceilings.”
