Winter Storm: Where The Heaviest Snow Will Hit Metro Detroit

Metro Detroit is expected to get anywhere from 8 to 14 inches of snow, the National Weather Service warned.

METRO DETROIT — A massive storm is expected to sweep across central portions of the United States, bringing freezing temperatures and heavy snow, creating difficult driving conditions.

Metro Detroit is expected to get anywhere from 8 to 14 inches of snow, the National Weather Service warned.

However, before the snow starts, temperatures will reach the 40s on Tuesday before rain showers move in Tuesday night. The rain will transition into snow around midnight and the heavy snow will begin falling Wednesday morning around 4:00 a.m., creating slick driving conditions for Wednesday's morning commute.

Around 2 inches of snow is expected by Wednesday at noon, with an additional 3-4 inches by Wednesday evening in the metro area. Overall, there is expected to be 6-7 inches of snow on the ground by Thursday's morning commute.

"Travel could be very difficult to impossible," the National Weather Service warned. "Patchy, blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility."

It will continue snowing Thursday with around 10 inches of snow on the ground at noon. An addition 3 inches of snow is expected in some areas throughout Thursday, leaving anywhere between 8-14 inches of snow in the metro area by Thursday night.

Oakland and Macomb counties are expected to get 8-12 inches of snow, while Wayne county is expected to get 10-14 inches of snow, the National Weather Service warned. The heaviest snow is expected late Wednesday into Thursday, "with the highest amounts edged from the I-94/Ann Arbor to Detroit corridor southward," the national weather service warned.

Several Michigan cities on the west side of the state including Benton Harbor and St. Joseph could see 20 inches of snow, with at least 10 inches expected in the area, the national weather service warned.

Heavier snowfall totals are expected the further south and west toward the Indiana and Ohio border. Some Northwest Ohio areas that include Toledo are under a winter storm warning for 10-16 inches.
