Dexter, Chelsea Partner For Second Annual Golf Fundraiser

The joint event included 18 holes of golf and prizes from local businesses to benefit the Chelsea and Dexter chambers of commerce.

Light winds and temperatures hovering in the mid-60s weren't enough to deter dozens of golfers for the second annual Dexter and Chelsea joint golf outing at Reddeman Farms on Tuesday.

The fundraiser brought 25 teams to the greens teeing off to benefit the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce and the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce.

"The golf outing is the single largest fundraiser for both chambers," Abby Goldberg, executive director of the Dexter Chamber, said. "By combining our events together, there's a better opportunity for members to network and it provides broader exposure for businesses in both communities that sponsor the holes."

Goldberg said proceeds from the event are divided between the chambers and used for general operating expenses. Last year's inaugural fundraiser brought in roughly $10,000 for Dexter, which was used to update the chamber's website and organize monthly business breakfasts.

Bob Pierce, executive director of the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, said funds from the golf outing are critical for the chamber's daily operations.

"Chambers are exclusively funded through membership fees and fundraising," he explained. "The money we bring in from the golf outing makes up roughly 15 percent of our general fund, which pays for salaries, rent, advertising and membership events.

"By combining our events, we've given chamber members a better opportunity to network and increase profits for both communities."

Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan said having the chambers partner together to promote local businesses is critical to smaller communities.

"I think it's great," he said. "There's been a real focus from leaders in both Chelsea and Dexter to partner together in order to bring more businesses, and subsequently more jobs to the area.

"(The golf outing) is a perfect chamber of commerce event. I can't be happier to be out here."

Dexter resident Barry Pavesi agreed, stating, "It's a great way to bring a lot of people together. Virtually everyone is having a good time."

And while some attendees were focused on the improving their golf score from last year, others said they were just grateful to be able to support the chambers.

"It's a great event. I'm glad the weather held up," Paul Cousins of Dexter said. "Last year it was so hot, you couldn't breath!"
