Dexter Community Band Performs Hollywood Hits

The group will perform a selection of film and television scores at its concert on Feb. 26.

The Dexter Community Band will present a concert on Feb. 26 titled "Themes Familiar."

The concert will be held at 3 p.m. at the Dexter Performing Arts Center inside Dexter High School.

The concert is free and open to the public. Handicapped seating is available. The 85-member band is under the baton of William Gourley. The band will add to their musical presentation with stage decorations that contribute to the theme of the concert.

This fun concert will delight all ages and resurrect some fond memories of movies past. Remember The Lone Ranger? What was that familiar theme? The band will perform a new arrangement by T.H. Rollinson of the William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini.

John Williams is famous for his movie scores. How old were you when you first saw E.T. and Star Wars? The band presents a new work titled John Williams' Fantasy arranged for band by Naohiro Iwai.

Many cartoons utilized music from well-known works. George Bizet's Carmen, transcribed by Tolhru Takahashi, will bring back many Saturday morning memories.

One can not forget the contribution the Disney Studios have made to our movie history. A Disney Fantasy, arranged by Naohiro Iwai, features the familiar tunes of Mickey Mouse March, It's a Small World, Heigh-Ho, Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?, Someday My Prince Will Come, Whistle While You Work and When You Wish Upon a Star.

Who remembers the Pink Panther? Henry Mancini has contributed many memorable movie music scores. Mancini, arranged by Stephen Bulla, features the familiar theme from Pink Panther, Moon River, Baby Elephant Walk, Dreamsville and Peter Gunn.
