Get Your Hands Dirty at the Dexter Arts Center

Weeklong camps give students an opportunity to explore crafts.

Dexter youths seeking fun and adventure this summer need look no further than their own backyard with a series of weekly camps at the .

Sarah Davis, program coordinator, said several slots are still available for programs in mosaics, songwriting and pottery.

"We're able to offer (instruction) to three to eight children at a time," she said.

Day camps run from 9-11:30 a.m. or 1-3:30 p.m. weekdays, depending on the class, artist Pam O'Hara said.

She said arts and crafts are a great way to keep children and teens occupied while teaching them new skills.

"The art center is a place to come and relax and enjoy yourself," O'Hara said. "We're conveniently located in the community, so you don't have to drive to Ann Arbor."

Each of the classes offers the opportunity to learn different techniques — from the Earth Smart class, which focuses on creating projects out of recycled materials, to the Exploring Nature Camp, which teaches children how to draw trees, insects, landscapes and other natural objects or settings.

Some of the camps are designated for ages 6 and younger, such as the Under Sea Camp and the Fun With Sculpture Camp, while other camps are open to children 6-12 and adults.

Prices vary by camp. Participants may register online at dexterartcenter.org.

For parents looking to add a little fun to their child's birthday party, O'Hara said the arts center also offers party packages, which include crafts and snacks.

"All we ask is for the parent to provide the cake and the decorations," she said.

There will also be crafts available during the annual Dexter Daze festival in August, O'Hara said.
