Three separate crashes on Interstate 696 Sunday afternoon led up to 160 vehicles involved in pileups, Michigan State Police said.

METRO DETROIT — Three separate crashes on Interstate 696 Sunday afternoon led up to 160 vehicles involved in pileups, Michigan State Police said.
State troopers said some of the most notable crashes across the freeway were in Farmington Hills and Warren. Up to 70 vehicles were involved in a pileup crash on eastbound Interstate 696 near Halstead Road and up to 30 vehicles on westbound Interstate 696 at Middlebelt Road.
Officials also said there were up to 60 vehicles that were involved in a pileup crash on westbound Interstate 696 between Hoover and Van Dyke. No serious injuries were reported in any of the crashes by officials.

State troopers said most of the crashes happened because drivers were driving too fast own the freeway. Although there wasn't much accumulation from the snow, it came down in a quick burst, which cause slippery road conditions and near whiteout conditions.
"As another snow event is being predicted for later this week please remember: Drive the speed that is safest for road conditions and increase that distance between you and the car in front of you," officials said. "This will help avoid those multiple vehicle crashes."
