Renew Dog License by June 1 to Avoid Higher Cost, Citation

Oakland County residents have until June 1 to renew their dog licenses, at a cost of $7.50 for altered and $15 for unaltered dogs.

Discounts are available for senior citizens.

After June 1, dog license fees increase to $30. In addition, dog owners caught with a delinquent license will be issued a citation that allows them 14 days to purchase a dog license to void the ticket. Failure to purchase the license will result in an appearance in district court where the fine is $65-$125.

“Having your dog licensed at all times is not only required by law but imperative for pet owners if they get lost,” said Oakland County Animal Control (OCAC) Supervisor Joanie Toole. “The license is a lost dog’s ticket home.”

All dogs over 4 months of age are required by Michigan State law to wear an Oakland County license at all times. In order to purchase a license, the owner must provide proof that the dog is up to date on rabies vaccinations.
