Botsford Hospital names 28 for Nursing Excellence Awards

Local nurses earn awards from their employer

Botsford Hospital celebrated National Nurses Week earlier this month, recognizing 28 exceptional nurses. The 25th annual Nursing Excellence Awards, held on May 4 at the Greek Islands Bar and Grill, celebrated those individuals who go above and beyond in their field. The awards are one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by Botsford.

Those honored individuals recently received their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or their certification/ recertification as clinical nurse specialist, lactation consultant, oncology, emergency nurse, orthopedics or perioperative nurse. Others were awarded for professional presentations, a unit contribution and a lifesaving event.

“We have such a knowledgeable, deeply caring nursing staff at Botsford Hospital. My nurses make me so proud every day,” said Marge Hasler, RN, Botsford’s chief nursing officer and vice president of Patient Care Services. “Yet, the 28 we honored this year hold a special place in my heart for their dedication to the nursing profession and for reaching beyond their day-to-day duties to attain new goals.”

This year’s recipients are Laura Gervasi, Karen Hering, Kristin Paulson, Danielle Poupard and Frank Zuziak of Farmington Hills; Shukri Ashaweh and Nicole Fenstermacher of Dearborn; Angela Bell of Livonia; Jean Benedict of South Lyon; Roy Boivin of Windsor, Canada; Kimberly Carrion of Taylor; Janice Cecil, Maura Doerr and Jennifer Thompson of Westland; Clinton Dinnan of Waterford; Miriam Dudas of Southfield; Lauren Greer of Plymouth; Mike Martel of Wixom; Amanda Mastrofini of Dearborn Heights; Brian Moore of Green Oak Township; Daniela Murariu and Gail Przytulski of West Bloomfield; Barbara Nishimiya of Metamora; Amy-Lynn Shrum of Lincoln Park; Candice Templin of Berkley; Deborah Timmons of Howell; Elaine Webber of Huntington Woods; and Sherry White of Milford.

Karen Hering was awarded for her unit contribution with the creation of the Journal Club. Founded earlier this year, the club meets and discusses professional journal articles related to the operating room. Since the club’s creation, three of its patient safety proposals have been implemented in Botsford’s Surgical Services department.

Miriam Dudas was awarded for her participation in a lifesaving event. She was punching out when she overheard two people running toward the building in a panic. Stopping to ask what she could do to help, Dudas directed the pair to go to the main desk and call 911. She then rushed to aid the physician performing CPR and stayed until EMS arrived.
