Boyfriend Arrested In Connection To Fatal Southfield Hit-And-Run: Cops

Police said the boyfriend started the incident when he pulled out a gun and pointed it at a driver, causing the driver to speed away.

SOUTHFIELD, MI — Police arrested the boyfriend of a pregnant woman who was struck and killed Sunday night by a vehicle outside a Southfield apartment building, police said.

Davon Lovan, 25, from Redford, was arrested after police said he pulled out a gun and pointed it at a driver during an argument in the parking lot at the Country Court Apartments on Greenfield Road near Interstate 696 around 3 p.m.

That driver then sped off and struck 27-year-old Tiara Bianka Jones, who was pregnant, police said. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died. But doctors were able to safely deliver her baby - a little boy, police said.

Police initially arrested the driver of the fatal crash but later released the driver as the investigation moved forward.

Police ultimately decided to arrest Jones' boyfriend-who is also the father to her baby-because they said he started the incident when he pulled out a gun and threatened the driver.

"[Lovan] produced a handgun and pointed that handgun at the driver and stated that he would kill him," Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said. "The driver-fearing that he would be shot-placed the vehicle in reverse and ultimately struck Ms. Jones."

Moreover, police said they found no intention of the driver to strike Jones.

"There's no argument that should end in a loss of life," Barren said. "I've said this many times as I've met with community and media outlets: guns will get you in more trouble than whatever it gets you out of."
