Let Me Introduce You to the Army Reserve Johnny
Without the recruiter, USAREC could not accomplish its important mission of providing the strength for the Army.
From September 17, 1990 through April 13, 1992 I was assigned as an Amry Reserve Recruiter to the United States Army Recruiting Command Des Moines, Iowa.
My duties consisted of maintaining contacts, interviewing qualified applicants for enlistment into the Army Reserve. I talked to high school students in Ames , Ankeny, Cedar Falls, Des Moines, Iowa City, Johnston, Marion, Urbandale, Waukee. This is what we would affectionately call "windshield time."
Conducting Interviews and discussing individual aims and goals and training opportunities, was how another major portion of the day was spent.

The Army Reserve provides a variety of tuition assistance programs such as independent study assistance, college and university assistance and the Montgomery GI Bill.
Army Reserve soldiers, former reserve members and their dependents are authorized commissary privileges if they meet eligibility requirements.

Reserve soldiers earn what’s called Unit Training Pay. Unit Training Pay is money you earn while training on weekends and during full-time training events. Unit Training Pay is only part of your total pay as a Soldier in the Army Reserve.

One of our most popular programs that attracted the high school students was the High School to Flight School Program:
Flying aircraft is a coveted career in the United States armed services, and the process to become a military pilot is a competitive one. Most candidates need at least a bachelor’s degree to apply.
The exception is the Army, where the fleet consists mainly of helicopters rather than fixed-wing aircraft. Becoming a helicopter pilot in the Army does not require higher education or prior enlistment.
Fort Rucker in Alabama, is where the Army trains its pilot recruits. The program allows high school graduates to apply to become warrant officers, a rank necessary to attend Army Aviation School.
Once accepted the applicant will first have to attend nine weeks of basic combat training and six weeks of warrant officer candidate school.
The program begins with classroom instruction on the intricacies of rotary-winged aircraft. You will learn basic flight physics, flight systems, emergency procedures, and you will learn how to draw and read flight maps.
Once all training is completed you’ll become an expert in one of four
helicopters: the OH-58 Kiowa reconnaissance aircraft; the UH-60 Black Hawk,
built for medical evacuations and search and rescue missions; the AH-64 Apache,
the Army’s primary attack helicopter; or the CH-47 Chinook, a transport
chopper.
Of course to help sell this program I had a large Apache Helicopter poster centered behind my desk and and then I would show the applicants a well orchestrated video showing the capabilities of the Apache...I had a lot of success in selling this program.
