An Oakland County crime task force tracked the suspect to a Detroit motel, where the suspect was armed with a "pretty large butcher knife."

Updated. DETROIT, MI — A 54-year-old man who was a suspect in a Farmington Hills bank robbery was shot and killed Wednesday morning after a multi-agency task force tracked him to a Detroit motel, according to multiple media reports.

Detroit Deputy Chief David Levalley told WDIV-TV the suspect refused to answer the door to the motel room and was armed with a "pretty large butcher knife" when police broke through.

The suspect approached a teller and passed a note implying he was armed and demanded money at a Bank of America branch in Farmington Hills about 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Farmington Hills police said in a news release. No weapon was seen, however. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, he left the bank, police said.

The Farmington Hills bank robbery occurred exactly thee weeks after the suspect was paroled by the Michigan Department of Corrections after a 2006 conviction for robbing a LaSalle Bank that is in the same building as the Bank of America branch he allegedly robbed Tuesday, Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus told The Detroit News.

The shooting is under investigation by Detroit police and Michigan State Police.
