Police had been at the residence at four times since 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday night to deal with verbal disputes, most recently an hour before the man was fatally shot once in the chest, the Detroit Free Press reports.

There were no allegations of violence during those police calls, Assistant Police Chief Matt Koehn said, but the victim was allegedly armed with a piece of concrete when he was shot.

The man’s mother has been released from custody. Koehn said the investigation is expected to corroborate her account of self defense.

Two other women and two infants in the residence at the time of the shooting. There were no other injuries.

Police said there have been past allegations of assault involving the victim.

The investigation is continuing, and police said the public is not in danger.

The Farmington Hills Fire Department attempted advanced life support at the scene and transported the victim to Beaumont Hospital-Farmington Hills, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
