Charges Filed in Fundraiser Fraud After Murder-Suicide

Three kids lost their mom three days before Christmas, then were betrayed by a family friend who offered to help, authorities allege.

A woman who allegedly raised and then stole scholarship money intended for the children of a friend who had been killed in a murder-suicide late last year could face five years in prison under charges announced Tuesday by the Farmington Hills Police Department and Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Hailey Kristen Anderson, 33, of Farmington Hills was charged with felony violations of the Charitable Solicitation Act, which is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $20,000 fine, according to a news release.

Jamie Marie Dumas, 33, of Farmington Hills was shot to death three days before Christmas by her husband, Troy Baker, who then turned his gun on himself. In the weeks following, Andersen allegedly made off with thousands of dollars raised through crowdfunding to establish a college fund for three now motherless children and offset funeral expenses.

More than $5,000 was donated to a crowdfunding campaign on the GiveForward.com site, but was never turned over to the family.

Tanni Dumas, the victim’s mother, told WJBK-TV said she felt betrayed by the woman she had allowed to call her “Mom” after her mother died of cancer in 2000.

“ ... I let her call me ‘mom’ since the eighth grade,” Tanni Dumas said. “I said, ‘How could you do this to somebody who let you call you (her) Mom almost your whole entire life?’ “

Anderson was arraigned in 47th District Court before Judge Marla Parker, who released Anderson on personal bond. Her pre-examination is at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 25 before Judge James Brady, also in 47th District Court.
