LIVONIA, MI — An off-duty Farmington Hills police officer saved an elderly woman from a Livonia house fire last Monday.

Farmington Hills Police Officer Ryan Yudt and his K-9 Dozer located the fully engulfed home in a subdivision near Farmington Road and Six Mile Road on Monday Oct. 25 at 2:45 p.m., city officials said.

The Livonia Fire Department had not yet received any calls reporting the fire when Yudt exited his vehicle and approached a group of neighbors that told him they believed an elderly woman was inside the home, city officials said.

After Yudt was unable to enter the home through the front door because of heavy smoke and extreme heat, he quickly got in through the back of the home, city officials said.

Once inside, Yudt located the disoriented woman and carried her out of the home, city officials said.

The Livonia Fire Department then safety put out the fire and treated the woman, city officials said.

"If not for the heroic intervention of Officer Yudt, this resident may not have survived the smoke and fire spreading rapidly throughout her home," Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King said. "Our Department is proud of Officer Yudt’s actions in saving this woman’s life. His conduct is indicative of the extraordinary bravery of our Officers and their commitment to serving and ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of circumstances or zip code."
